Cone Tool -medical Beds For Children, BS EN 50637:2017-Figure 201.102a. This is one of the test tools of IEC 60601-2-52, the particular standard for the basic safety and essential performance of medical beds. Each tool reproduces a specific figure of the standard: a defined shape, mass and surface, so that the entrapment, strength and stability tests are repeatable between laboratories and defensible in an audit.
What it does
- Reproduces the geometry of the named IEC 60601-2-52 figure
- Applies or detects the condition the clause is written around (gap, entrapment, load, retention)
- Gives a pass/fail reading without interpretation
The related children's-bed standard BS EN 50637:2017 uses the same approach with its own figures; if your product range covers both adult and children's beds you need the tool set for each.

How it is used
- Set the bed up in the configuration the clause specifies (mattress, side rails, accessories).
- Bring the tool to the feature under test in the orientation shown in the figure.
- Apply the force or read the gap exactly as the clause words it.
- Record pass/fail for every position the clause lists — the standard usually requires several.
- Photograph the set-up for the test report; auditors ask for it.
Documenting the test
A medical-bed test report needs the figure number, the bed configuration, every position tested and a photograph of the set-up. Record them as you go rather than afterwards — the clause usually requires several positions, and reconstructing which ones were covered later is the most common cause of a report being queried.
Why the figure number matters
Medical-bed tools are not interchangeable. Each figure in IEC 60601-2-52 is a different shape with a different purpose, and using the wrong one produces a result that looks valid but is not. Order against the figure number in your test plan.
Care and handling
The tools are solid metal and tolerate bench use well, but the datums and edges are what carry the accuracy. Store them so they cannot strike each other, and have them dimensionally inspected if they are dropped.
Frequently asked questions
Do you supply the complete IEC 60601-2-52 tool set?
Yes — the cone tool, cylinder tool, loading pad and entrapment tools are all available, and we ship them as a set with a shared case.
Can you make a tool to a figure from a different edition?
Yes. Send us the edition and figure number and we will machine to it.
Is a certificate included?
Yes, the tool is dimensionally inspected before despatch and supplied with a certificate.
Do you cover BS EN 50637 as well?
Yes. Send us the figure number from the children's-bed standard and we will quote it.
