IEC60061-3: 7006-22A-5 E27 Gauge for Testing Contact-Making and Protection Against Accidental Contact During Insertion of Lamps in Lampholders

The drawing is intended only to illustrate the dimensions essential for interchangeability. The drawings are intended only to illustrate the essential dimensions of the gauge. The drawings are intended only to illustrate the essential dimensions of the gauge.

(1) Dimension E is the reference diameter associated with dimension S.

PURPOSE: To check E27 lampholders in respect of:

a) Contact-making with lamps having adverse dimensions.

b) Protection against accidental contact with live parts, viz. the cap shell, during insertion of a

lamp.

TESTING: The holder is connected in the test circuit as shown.

a) With switch A in position 2 and switch B open, the gauge is screwed fully home.

In this position, both lamps shall light.

b) After the test of a) above, the gauge is withdrawn until the lamps are extinguished.

Switch A is moved to position 1 and switch B is closed. The gauge is then screwed in slowly until

either of the lamps lights. With the gauge held in this position, switch B is opened and the test

probe at the side of the gage is slid downwards as far as it will go into the space between the gauge

and the holder. In this position the lamps shall not light.

The Gauge For Testing Protection Against Bulb-Neck Damage And For Testing Contact-Making In Lampholders E27-7006-22a-5 is a bulb-neck damage and contact-making gauge built to sheet 7006-22A-5 of IEC 60061-3. It checks contact-making with adverse-dimension lamps, protection against touching live parts during insertion, and the condition of the side contact. The E27 cap is an Edison screw with 27 mm nominal major thread diameter — the standard mains screw cap in most of the world. Kingpo machines this gauge in-house from hardened tool steel, inspects it against the sheet before despatch and ships it with a calibration certificate, so it can go straight into an incoming-inspection or production-gauging routine.

What this gauge checks

  • Clearance between the gauge and the rim of the holder, checked with a feeler gauge
  • That the holder rim cannot damage the bulb neck
  • That contact is still made in this position

The dimension that matters on a E27 cap is 27 mm nominal major thread diameter. It is what decides whether the lamp seats correctly and stays safe in the holder, and it is the geometry this gauge is built around.

How the test is run

  1. Screw the gauge fully home with the torque specified on the sheet — 1,0 Nm for ceramic holders and 0,4 Nm for all other holders.
  2. Check the clearance between the gauge and the edge of the rim of the holder. A feeler gauge of approximately 0,08 mm thickness and 5 mm width must pass over the full circumference.
  3. With the holder connected in the test circuit as shown on the sheet, confirm that the indicator lamp lights.
  4. Repeat the test for the other holder contact.

The verdict is the rim of the holder must not damage the bulb neck, and contact must still be made. Read the gauge, do not force it: a limit gauge that is forced into place tells you nothing about the part and damages the gauge.

GO and NOT GO — why you usually need both

A single limit gauge proves only one side of a tolerance. A GO gauge shows the part is not too small; a NOT GO gauge shows it is not too large. Running both is the only way to demonstrate a cap or a lampholder sits inside the band, and it is what an auditor will expect to see recorded. If you are building a gauge set from scratch, order the two together and keep them in the same case.

This gauge is not a GO / NOT GO pair on its own — it reads a specific feature. Pair it with the GO and NOT GO gauges of the same series when you need full dimensional coverage.

Getting the right sheet

IEC 60061-3 assigns one sheet number per gauge, and the number is what you should order against. Three things decide it: the cap family, whether you are checking a finished lamp or a lampholder, and which feature is being checked — thread, contact-making, protection against accidental contact, insertion torque or a named dimension. Sending us the sheet number avoids the most common error in this category, which is ordering a cap gauge when the test is on the holder, or the other way round.

Frequently asked questions

Is this gauge supplied with a calibration certificate?

Yes. Every Kingpo gauge is inspected against the sheet before despatch and shipped with a calibration certificate. We can also re-calibrate gauges you already hold.

Which lamps does the E27 version cover?

It covers E27 caps — 27 mm nominal major thread diameter. If your lamp uses a different cap family, the sheet number will be different; send us the cap marking and we will identify the sheet you need.

Can you make a gauge to a drawing instead of to a sheet number?

Yes. We machine to customer drawings as well as to IEC 60061-3 sheets, including modified gauges for production gauging where a full standard gauge is impractical.

What wears out on this type of gauge?

The gauging surfaces and any thread. Limit gauges are inspection tools, not production tools: keep them off the production line, store them dry, and re-calibrate on a cycle set by usage rather than by calendar.
